Unit 1: US History
This unit is covers the major Native American Indian tribes of the Eastern seaboard,
early Viking exploration into North America, and a brief review of topics
students should have been exposed to in world history related to European
Adventurism into the new world and causes and conflicts. The unit then gets
into the various groups colonizing what the Europeans termed “the New World.”
Following this students will explore topics related to early colonial civil
liberties, religious beliefs, and morality issues such as slavery.
The
Revolutionary War is then studied fairly in depth and a solid week on the
Constitution and Bill of Rights ensures students know and understand their
basic liberties and responsibilities as citizens and future voters. This is
followed by discussions and readings on the growth of cotton, the expansion of
slavery and the Missouri Compromise. Students will be expected to write a solid
essay on the Missouri compromise detailing what it was, why and when it came to
be, who the major actors involved were, and how it changed early America.
Students then learn of War with Mexico and begin to read early American
Literature such as “Last of the Mohicans” and research political writers such
as Emerson. This then brings students through Antebellum America and sets the
stage for the War of the Rebellion, causes leading up to it, and the final
breaking point between the states.
